I can hear echo's of my dad spouting "Money doesn't grow on trees...turn off the light"...or "We're not heating (or cooling depending on where you live) the outside! Shut the door!". Once I had my own kids...I learned quickly just exactly what he meant.
Leave a single light on for one year and it will burn 714 pounds of coal and create 1,852 pounds of carbon dioxide. Most heating/cooling systems are maximized when the doors to rooms are kept closed, not to mention the wasted energy created when the doors to the outside are inadvertently left open.
If your family is forgetting to "flip the switch", try having a "Energy Challenge". Each month one person is the light and door monitor. Anyone he or she catches leaving the lights on has to pay a fine. If everyone goes one week without being fined, celebrate with a special treat, like ice-cream sundaes for dessert or family movie night.
