October is a good month to do some advance garden planning! You already know you should be planting native and conserving water, but why not take it to the next level by using your space to grow some of your own food?
If you're a tad light on land, like I am, consider containers or a community garden near you.
There is a ton of information on the Internet regarding container gardening. Need containers?
Again many options. Here are a few to prompt your thinking:
1) Got a stack of old buckets lying around?? Create drainage holes in the bottom and/or add an inch or two of gravel or rockery and you're all set.
2) Get on Freecycle and do a WANTED post and request pots/buckets/tubs that you can use.
3) Find the nearest thrift store and check for planter boxes, tubs, buckets, pots, etc. You'll be doing your part to re-purpose items.
Think outside the box for planting: old bathtub, wash tubs, sinks, wheelbarrows, wine barrels, etc. all make lovely planters - arrange in a corner of your back yard and turn your trash to valuable real estate for planting.
Got an old wooden or wire chair? Put a tub or pot where the seat once was and the back and legs become great 'creeping' vine rails.
